In the world of big data, quantum computing is the latest big idea to make waves.
It uses quantum entanglement, the fact that electrons in a single particle interact with each other, to do some computations.
It’s an idea which could be used to crack a huge amount of encrypted information.
But it has not been tested, and Google’s announcement that it has developed a way to access quantum computers is not a big deal.
Quantum computers are tiny computers that can be built using a few thousand qubits, or qubits of light.
That’s where quantum entangling comes in.
A computer can be constructed by making a pair of entangled photons, or particles, which can be connected together.
The photons are then made to have a special property called “quantum entanglements”, which allows them to “bounce” off of each other and be linked together again.
If that doesn’t work, the photons will just “tumble”.
It can be done in a very small space, but for quantum computing to work, all the entangled photons must be linked up.
In other words, the quantum computers need to be super-efficient, and this is the part of the equation that Google is trying to solve.
Google says that quantum computers are about to be “exploited for everything from drug discovery to medical diagnostics”.
Quantrum computing is a very important step in the development of quantum computers, but it’s not clear if it’s going to be big or small.
“We expect the technology to play a key role in all areas of research for the foreseeable future,” said Tim Loeffler, Google’s head of engineering, at the company’s investor conference.
Is it going to work?
“Quantum computing is an exciting technology and it is one of the first technologies we have seen that is not currently commercially available,” he added.
What does Google say about quantum computing?
Google’s announcement of its quantum computing project was largely about how much it thinks it can do.
It said that it was “building on the work of some of the most renowned researchers in quantum computing” such as Alan Turing, who was a mathematician at Cambridge University.
“We have already seen quantum computing in action in the form of new forms of quantum cryptography, including quantum search and quantum entangler, which use entangled photons to build the most secure quantum computer ever built,” Google said.
In fact, Google was not the only company working on quantum computing.
The UK government, for example, is also using quantum computers to create secure communications networks, and Microsoft is developing quantum computers for AI.
Why is Google working on it?
The first quantum computers were invented by Russian physicist Alexander Ebrard in the 1930s.
They were able to solve problems which would otherwise be impossible with conventional computers.
Google is aiming to solve these problems in a much smaller scale.
“The biggest breakthrough in quantum computers has been the way in which they are being built,” said Dr Loeefler.
However, he added that Google’s work is not the first to use quantum computers.
“Google has been using quantum computing for decades,” he said.
“It is not unusual for a research project to start out with a number of other people who are also working on the project and then eventually the first quantum computer is used to solve a problem which would normally be impossible.”
Google is also building a quantum computing accelerator, which is going to make it possible for scientists to develop more powerful quantum computers which could solve problems that are impossible for today’s computers.
