Recode’s Kara Swisher talks to Mark Zuckerberg about the company’s move to make smartphones run on its own chip.
Zuckerberg says the move to build its own chips has been a “very, very long time coming” and says it has “tremendous potential.”
1 / 8 Facebook’s move into the smartphone market started in 2015, when the company partnered with Intel and Qualcomm to create a chip called ARM, a combination of ARM and x86 processors.
ARM has a lot of similarities to Nvidia’s chips, but it was Nvidia that won out in the early days.
Facebook’s chips were already a huge success, and the company spent the last few years working with Qualcomm to develop a number of its own processors.
“We had a very long-term vision for the future,” Zuckerberg says.
“And it was about the future for us and what it meant to be part of the world.
And so we felt that it was a natural fit.
So when we announced our partnership with ARM, we knew we were on the right track.
And we are really excited to be able to put our chips into the hands of people around the world.”
Zuckerberg says Facebook is the “biggest consumer device maker on earth” and has been working hard to develop more of those chips, including working with ARM to build new chips that will power its mobile phones.
Facebook was also working on building its own computer chip.
Facebook recently began using ARM chips in some of its phones and tablets, including the $600 Pixel and the $1,200 Moto X. But it still doesn’t have any of the high-end chips for its phones.
In fact, Zuckerberg says he doesn’t think the company has enough of them to build phones.
“When we were working on this, it seemed like it would take us forever to get a phone to market,” he says.
But the company is now building chips for the first time on a chip-maker-designed platform called “Project Ara,” which is supposed to allow smartphones to run on other devices.
“The way we’re building this is very much like what we’re doing with our mobile products,” Zuckerberg explains.
“It’s a lot like the way we build software.
We start off with a software platform, which is like a framework that we use to build a hardware platform, and then we use that to create this software platform that can run on the device.
And it’s not just hardware.
We’re building it with the help of software.”
Zuckerberg describes Project Ara as a “big leap forward for the mobile industry.”
Facebook and Qualcomm will build a version of the chips for phones called “Arri” and “Arris.”
Each will be a new chip, with each being able to run a number the company says will be the “number of chips that could fit into a phone.”
The chips will be built on the same chip architecture as the chips in the Nexus phones and the Moto X phones.
The chip architecture will be based on a new version of ARM called ARMv8, which Intel introduced in 2016.
But instead of a single chip, each new version will have a different chip on top of it, called a “stack.”
Facebook is also working with chip giant Samsung to build “Armed with ARM,” which will run on “Arriv” and be called “Aura.”
Facebook says the chips are being built with ARMv9 chips, which it has already tested on a number, including a “Nexus 7,” the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the Motorola Moto X Force.
Facebook also plans to use the ARM chips for “Arrim” and the Ara chips for an “Nova” phone, a phone it plans to bring to market by 2019.
“Our goal is to have Arrim and Ara by the end of 2019,” Zuckerberg tells Swisher.
“So, you’ll be able in the next five years to buy a phone with ARM chips, or a phone using the ARM technology.”
Zuckerberg also says the company will be working with companies like Qualcomm and Intel to “build a platform for ARRIM, Ara and the next generation of mobile phones.”
The ARRim chips are meant to allow the phones to run apps that run on ARM devices.
Qualcomm is working on the first version of a new ARM chip called the “Broadcom BCM841,” which it says will allow phones to power new types of computing like video streaming.
Samsung has been developing chips for ARM, but its chips are based on the “ARMv8” chip architecture.
Google, meanwhile, has been testing ARM chips on smartphones that can be used in devices that use its own hardware, including its Nexus 6 and Pixel phones.
Zuckerberg explains that the phones will have an ARM chip inside them.
“There’s an ARMv7 chip inside the phone, which will power the phone,” Zuckerberg said.
